Essex has an abundance of businesses doing big things in the region and the upcoming Business Excellence Awards Essex will celebrate those who have especially made a huge impact in the last year.

With 16 categories up for grabs at the ceremony, which takes place on Thursday 26 September at Five Lakes Resort, it isn’t just large corporations who are acknowledged at the awards.

The ‘SME of the Year’ award honours small and medium sized businesses who have made an outstanding contribution to the regional business community.

A number of businesses have also come on board as category sponsors of the event. This role means they are responsible for judging and selecting the three shortlisted finalists including the winner.

Award-winning insurance brokers Jelf has given its name to the ‘SME of the Year’ award.

Experts in insurance, risk management and employee benefits they have built long-lasting relationships with clients since 1989. The business support other businesses and individuals with a wide range of services and Brett Wexler, Branch Director at Jelf explained the appeal of the category

“The opportunity to sponsor the ‘SME of the Year’ category was particularly attractive to us because Essex is essentially an SME county, with many companies falling into this category” he said.

“We are looking forward to seeing a range of businesses from all industry sectors enter. SMEs are the backbone of the economy and we are proud to be sponsoring this category by shining a spotlight on SMEs and celebrating their success.”

As category sponsors of this award, Brett also outlined what they will be looking for from the winners of this award.

“We will be looking for a business which has shown marked success over the year, shows good prospects for growth and development opportunities for the future the business,” he added.

“Core characteristics we will be looking for are innovation, resilience, adaptability, and good risk governance.”

As well as the opportunity to acknowledge business success, the awards also raise much needed money for charity.

The Lord’s Taverners are the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity who are committed to giving disabled and disadvantaged young people a sporting chance. A game of stand-up bingo and silent auction will take place with all funds going to the organisation.
